Huge Change Of Plans For WWE NXT Title Match At TakeOver

It appears as though a major change in plans has occurred regarding the upcoming WWE NXT Championship Title Match at TakeOver in Philly during Royal Rumble weekend. As you may know, at this week’s set of NXT TV Tapings it was revealed that Johnny Gargano would be challenging Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas for his newly won NXT Title. It looks as though that is now no longer the plan going into TakeOver.

At this week’s tapings WWE recorded four matches: Trent Seven vs. Killian Dane, Kassius Ohno vs. Johnny Gargano, Roderick Strong vs. Lars Sullivan, and Adam Cole vs. Aleister Black. The winners from each of these four singles matches would move on to compete in a Fatal 4 Way Match where the winner would be named #1 Contender to Almas’ NXT Title. Gargano won his match against Ohno and moved on to the Fatal 4 Way where he was victorious and securing his chance to face Almas for the title at NXT TakeOver in Philly.

But not so fast…

WWE NXT General Manager took to social media this morning at 10 am and had a major announcement for the fans. You can see the tweet and video below:

As you can see in GM Regal’s announcement shown above, he made absolutely no mention of the Kassius Ohno vs. Johnny Gargano match taped on Wednesday. Instead he announced Velveteen Dream vs. Kassius Ohno as a qualifying match in the series.

So this means that WWE still has to record the Velveteen Dream and Kassius Ohno match, as well as a new Fatal 4 Way contest involving the winner of the Kassius Ohno/Velveteen Dream match to determine the new #1 Contender.

So far there has been no explanation for the change, and what this means for Gargano. We will keep you updated on the situation as more information becomes known.
