Lawsuit Filed Against WWE By Raven & Buff Bagwell Dismissed, Allowing For New Content To Be Added To WWE Network In 2018
PWInsider reported earlier today that the lawsuit which Marcus Bagwell and Scott “Raven” Levy filed against WWE over allegations that the company owes them royalties from usage of material featuring their work in matches and segments from WCW and WWE on the WWE Network, has been dismissed by the United States District Court of Connecticut.
After the lawsuit was initially filed and early attempts to have it dismiss had failed on WWE’s part, sources indicated that plans to add WWE Sunday Night Heat and WCW Thunder were both put on hold, even though the complete runs of each of the series were finished and ready to be added to the WWE Network’s Video on Demand Library.
Both Raven and Bagwell were featured prominently on those series and the addition of any new material could have added to potential damages had the courts not decided to rule in favor of the WWE.
Yesterday’s dismissal now allows for WWE’s planned content releases on The WWE Network to resume, and we should expect that content to be added to the WWE Network in 2018.
The ruling for the most part closes the door, at least for now, on the issue of whether WWE talents should be paid royalties for material featuring them on the WWE Network.
It had originally been rumored that the two sides may have been speaking on terms of a settlement which may have led to the dismissal, however PWInsider is now reporting there was no settlement as part of the dismissal.
The report went on to say they were told that Bagwell and Levy had agreed to drop the lawsuit after being deposed by WWE attorneys, finally agreeing to the stipulation that they could not bring a new lawsuit against the company.
PWInsider reports that at no time did WWE attempt to settle the lawsuit.
