As seen on this week’s episode of SmackDown LIVE, in the six-woman tag team match Ruby Riott got the pinfall victory of Becky Lynch.
On today’s installment of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer indicated that WWE appears to be protecting SmackDown LIVE Women’s Champion Charlotte heading into WrestleMania 34 where she will defend her title. This would be the reason that Becky Lynch took the pin for the team in the match.
Usually, WWE will book the heel to get the pinfall over the babyface as part of the build for the pay-per-view match. This time around however, it appears as though they are actually going to protect both Ruby and Charlotte going into their match at Fastlane.
It is believed that Charlotte will retain her title over Ruby Riott at Fastlane and go on to defend the belt against Asuka at WrestleMania 34. The company feels that protecting Charlotte and giving her momentum going into this high-profile match at ‘Mania is something that she will need.
