Jerry Lawler Reveals He Suffered A Stroke 3 Weeks Ago – Recalls Details Of Episode

WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler reveals that he suffered a stroke just a couple weeks before WrestleMania 34.

Lawler returned to WWE Commentary along with Jim Ross this past weekend to call the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle at WrestleMania 34 from New Orleans. However, it appears as though we are lucky Lawler is alive let alone was able to make it to WrestleMania 34 to call the Andre Battle Royal with JR; as Lawler revealed on the latest episode of his podcast “Dinner with The King” that he suffered a stroke on March 21st, just a couple weeks prior to his WrestleMania appearance.

Lawler also revealed that he was unable speak for three days or walk for two days after suffering the stroke, but that he has since made a full recovery, which is apparent by his ability to call the match Sunday at WrestleMania.

Regarding his stroke, Lawler said:

“Well, has it been three weeks? Let me look at the date. It was on March the 21st at about 6:30 PM.. I was just here at my house. As a matter of fact we were scheduled to leave the next day on the 22nd to go to LA or Anaheim for the WonderCon, my buddy Headlock’d comics guy Mike Kingston and I were going to be out there. We had us a space all at the big WonderCon. It was going to be the first time I had ever been to that one in Anaheim. We were going to go to Disney World the next day as well, and umm… So it was on a Wednesday, we were going to leave for that on Tuesday, then of course we were all thinking about the uh.. hosting the, uh.. down in New Orleans at WrestleMania hosting the Hall of Fame, and then we were talking about doing something with, I think at that time.. I don’t know if they remembered or if they had already told us that JR and I were gonna call the Battle Royal at that time – I think maybe they had. But anyway, just ya know.. we had a big week and a big couple weeks coming up ahead of us. But, lemme go back ten, to Wednesday afternoon around 6:30 in the evening… ummm… I had a stroke. Just kind of crazy out of the clear blue.

Sorta, I mean I was feeling basically fine, umm and you know, you and I have talked about the story.. and I don’t know how is the best way to uhh telling exactly how this happened.. without telling exactly how it happened. But umm, Lauryn and I were umm, together.. and umm (laughs) you’re going to have to help me a little here.. how to best way to phrase it.”

The show’s co-host laughs and interjects by saying that the two were “you were expressing love for each other in a certain way.” To which Lawler laughs and says that is a very good description.

Lawler continues by saying:

“Anyway, at the end of that, ummm.. I get up, and I said something and to Lauren.. and I didn’t really feel anything, but I said something to Lauryn and she said “What did you say?” And I, I realized then that whatever I said didn’t sound right. And I said, I dunno.. Did I just say something that didn’t sound right? And she said “yeah, you did” and then she looked at me, we made eye contact and she said “oh my god, Jerry.. go look in the mirror.” And I’m thinking, “what?” So I walk around the uh, I walk around to the bathroom there and I look in the mirror, and the whole right side of my mouth. My mouth was like drooping and I was drooling all the way down to my chin. And I looked at Lauren, and at that point I said [inaudible mumbling noises]. I couldn’t even speak. And she screamed, “Oh my god Jerry! You’re having a stroke!”… “

Lawler goes on in further detail what transpired, saying that Lauryn refused to call an ambulance and drove her to the hospital herself because she could get him there faster, which doctors agreed was the case. Lawler also stated that when he was taken into the Emergency Room that his blood pressure was 256/145.

Lawler also reveals that Doctors told him that he actually had a brain hemorrhage. Which was causing him to lose the ability to speak, and that he was in placed in ICU on Thursday while they monitored the bleeding. Lawler added that when he woke up Saturday morning 100% better, and that he was able to continue his normal routine. Lawler noted that Doctors were shocked he made such a quick recovery.

Lawler also revealed that he didn’t want Lauryn to call anyone at WWE and tell them. But she did, and that the only people within the company that knew were Kevin Dunn, Triple H, and Vince McMahon. Lawler also said that he is surprised that it was able to have been kept a secret for three weeks.
