Backstage Update On The Decision To Have Charlotte Go Over Asuka And End Her Streak
Bodyslam.net‘s own Brad Shepard had originally reported on plans that WWE had in place that would have seen Asuka go over Charlotte at WrestleMania 34 for the SmackDown Women’s Title and then have Carmella cash in her Money in the Bank briefcase unsuccessfully.
Obviously those plans changed. Brad reveals on the latest episode of “Backstage in WWE with Brad Shepard and Jon Fisher” when exactly the decision was made to go in the direction WWE eventually went which saw Charlotte go over Asuka at WrestleMania to end her undefeated streak only to lose the title two nights later when Carmella cashed in her MITB briefcase following the brutal attack from the debuting “Iconic Duo” of Peyton Royce & Billie Kay.
“This was very interesting, because originally Asuka was going to win with a Carmella cash-in. Carmella was going to lose, and the big match they were going to build to was Asuka vs. Ronda Rousey. Now, you may have heard me personally promote the biggest match they could do is Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte, and they finally came around to that opinion at some point in the past few weeks.”
“I don’t know exactly when but it was around the time Asuka stopped using the armbar that they made the decision that Charlotte was going to go over and end the streak and be the person, and Vince lost faith in Asuka as the top woman to face Ronda Rousey. So that’s essentially what happened.”
