Backstage Update On Decisions For The Undertaker vs. John Cena Match At WrestleMania 34

The match between The Undertaker and John Cena at WrestleMania 34 was discussed in this week’s issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Dave Meltzer reveals that the reason the match between The Undertaker and John Cena was built the way it was by WWE because the company did not want the fans to have high expectations for the match. The belief is that WWE did not want fans to think that The Undertaker vs. John Cena match was going to be one of the biggest matches on the card, or even consider it to be a main event.

Meltzer adds that the decision for how the match would play out “was made months ago.” He goes on to say that it was apparent that The Undertaker would not be able to work a long match, so the company decided to downplay expectations by letting the audience know that The Undertaker would be at WrestleMania, but that there wouldn’t be any significant match.

With Cena losing the match in under three minutes, and the feeling was that fans would not be upset with an unadvertised match, regardless of the match length.
