WWE 205 Live Recap – Episode 91
Previously on 205 Live: Lio Rush beat Akira Tozawa in a match, Hideo Itami beat up on Tracer X and Cedric Alexander defeated Jack Gallagher in preparation for Sunday.
On Sunday at Summerslam, Drew Gulak lost and Cedric Alexander remains Cruiserweight Champion as well as undeafeated in 2018.
Cold Open
Drake Maverick narrates the opening video package that focuses on Summerslam. Drake then runs down the card of Noam Dar vs. TJP in their third match together. Both men have a victory over the other. We also have a tornado tag match with Buddy Murphy and Tony Nese vs. Lucha House Party. That match will be bonkers.
Wale is sitting at ringside for this! It’s amazing how he hasn’t been involved with MLW at all but he is on 205 Live.
Noam Dar vs. TJP
TJP cut a promo on his way to the ring to a quiet crowd. TJP says the beatin is gonna be gruesome and that he will work over Dar’s knee.
Noam comes out and zips up his jacket with some claps from the crowd. Wale brings up old storylines like Noam gallivanting with Alicia Fox. Dude knows his history and is a great celebrity addition to the announce table.
Wale calls TJP, JTP and I wonder if he watches The Goldberg’s. TJP grabs the mic and draws attention to Wale, TJP then dabs at Wale and Wale says “no one even dabs anymore!” Noam gets the upperhand after this small distraction. Wale is talking about Cardi B and Nigel says “I listen to him everytime I’m in the car with these two.”
As the match happens the commentators talks about what songs Wale has done with what artists. The boys are wrestling a good match but no one is appreciating it. Not the crowd, not the announcers and not even the ref.
Towards the end of the match commentary brings up how bad Noam is nursing his knee and how TJP is taking it to Dar’s knee. Noam is able to hit his five moves of doom and gain the victory after fighting out of the kneebar in a truly lackluster match.
Drew Gulak does a backstage promo and demands a rematch. Then the show cuts to Drake Maverick saying the rematch is denied because number one contenders earn it in the ring.
Akira Tozawa vs. Colin Delaney
Before the match can take place, The Brian Kendrick, Jack Gallagher and Drew Gulak disrupt the match and cut a promo about how they won’t leave until Drew Gulak gets a rematch. The crowd is non responsive.
Alexander comes out and says pro wrestling things until Drake Maverick shows up to shut this down. Drew says some Dr. Seuss bullshit and then makes fun of Alexander. After much goading the crowd starts a weak “let them fight chant”. The segment ends with a whole lot of nothing.
Lince Dorado & Gran Metalik vs. Buddy Murphy & Tony Nese
The match is tornado tag so it’s going to be hard to keep up as well as absorb the story.
The first few minutes of the match are grossly choreographed and really take me out of the match. It’s a weird episode. Nothing is really happening, the crowd is drained and none of the matches are really clicking.
The story of the match is Murphy and Nese take out Dorado and then double team up on Metalik. Commentary says that it’s speed vs. power and power is winning. Dorado has an injured thumb so Murphy and Nese focus on that while Metalik tries to fight his way back.
Metalik does have the moves to wake the crowd up though. It’s such a welcomed thing to hear the crowd react to stuff. Wrestling is barely watchable when there is no crowd reaction to me. This match is a lot less bonkers than I thought it would be.
It’s weird that Kalisto is at ringside and is 100% healthy but LHP decided to put Dorado in the ring. Dorado with the broken thumb..? Lucha House Party what are you thinking?
The match features some high spots and a bit more working over the thumb but it doesn’t really help the story. A lot of it is guys just waiting for their spots. The high spots are creative and well executed but nothing seems like it has urgency or that the competitors are trying to win.
A big crash and burn spot with Metalik doing a hurricanrana from the top rope to Nese who was crotched on the top rope onto Buddy Murphy who was outside. That gets a “This is Awesome” from the crowd. They are a bit invested but not loud at all. Buddy Murphy antagonizes Kalisto who ends up tripping Buddy up so Metalik can hit the code red for the win.
Man this episode was difficult to get through. Hopefully it is better next week.
