Did WWE Have To Make A Change To The Finals Of The Mae Young Classic?
This year’s Mae Young Classic is currently underway, with the finals set to take place at the upcoming Evolution PPV on October 28, 2018. The finals of the 2018 Mae Young Class will see Io Shirai face Toni Storm.
However, it appears as though this was not the original plan for the finals of the tournament.
Early in the tournament Tegan Nox suffered a serious injury during her quarterfinals match with Rhea Ripley. Nox was supposed to participate in last years Mae Young Classic but she suffered an ACL tear and was not able to compete. She returned to in-ring action back in April and was said to finally be back to 100%. Her injury to her knee this year is a huge setback for her, as it had been rumored that she could have possibly been the planned winner of this years tournament.
In this week’s edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, they noted that Tegan Nox was probably the planned winner of the 2018 MYC. Which would mean that the finals matchup between Toni Storm and Io Shirai was not the original plan for the upcoming Evolution PPV.
However, I would like to point out this report from Meltzer directly contradicts an earlier report from him a couple weeks ago. A caller asked during an episode of Wrestling Observer Radio about Tegan’s injury during the tournament and if she was supposed to go to the finals, to which Meltzer answered “Tegan Nox wasn’t going to the finals anyway, but could she have won that match? Yeah. It wouldn’t surprise me if they had to change that finish”.
So, take today’s update from Meltzer as you want, one week she wasn’t going to the finals, and today she was supposed to win it.
