205 Live Recap: Episode 104

Last week on 205 Live: Drew Gulak and Jack Gallagher were the better team in their match against Akira Tozawa and Brian Kendrick. Lucha House Party has been warned by Maria Kanellis. Lio Rush and Cedric Alexander had a barnburner of a match. Also, during Survivor Series, Buddy Murphy retained his championship against Mustafa Ali in one of the top three matches of the night!

Cold Open

A recap of the championship match from Survivor Series highlighting all the amazing spots and showing that Mustafa Ali couldn’t win the big one.

Buddy Murphy Promo

  • I can’t help but think how amazing the 205 Live belt would be if it was a normal black strap and gold plates instead of the purple and silver.
  • Murphy says our opinion means nothing to him because you can’t stop the unstoppable. Which makes sense because that’s the legit definition of unstoppable.

Noam Dar vs. Tony Nese

  • We are told that Buddy’s best friend is Tony Nese but Vic Joeseph says that their friendship is questioned by a lot of people.
  • Noam cuts a selfie promo backstage and really needs subtitles. Maybe subtitles would help with some wrestlers?
  • Nese overpowers Dar a few times but takes too much time showboating and Noam is able to get an advantage.
  • Noam does a spin type move while attempting a backslide that even got me dizzy just watching it.
  • Tony quickly gets the momentum back after some brawling outside and severely slows the match down.
  • Dar and Nese have some nice back and forth sequences both selling like they’ve really been in a battle. Buddy Murphy shows concern but hasn’t interfered yet.
  • Noam shows a bit of fire but Nese is able to overpower Dar once again and hit a Macho Man guillotine. This has been real fun so far.
  • The crowd is quite lively until Noam attempts his finishing kick. Murphy grabs Dar’s foot and that provides enough distraction for Tony to hit a Running Nese for the win.

And I’m Like… I like that Nese and Murphy are the “two man power trip” of 205 Live. Both men on a winning streak. This match was fun, didn’t have a lot of the 205 Live match tropes either! The lack of character is what hurt this match the most. I wish there was a middleground between Vince’s idea of 205 Live and HHH’s idea.

Mustafa Ali embraces the pain of failure and defeat. That way when he is tempted to stay down he will draw from this pain to make sure he never feels it again.

Drake Maverick tells the referee that shenanigans will happen during the main event and to be on alert. Drake tells Cedric Alexander that he always wanted to see Cedric and Mustafa Ali vs. Tony Nese and Buddy Murphy, which will be next week’s main event.

Local Competitors vs. Akira Tozawa and The Brian Kendrick

  • Like, speaking of character development. What are Tozawa and Kendrick’s characters? Kendrck doesn’t even bring his pirate flag anymore and Tozawa STILL only says “AHH!”
  • Jack Gallagher and Drew Gulak talk about how Kendrick and Tozawa are only together because of vengeance. Also Drew and Jack called themselves the “Submission Commission”.
  • As Kendrick and Tozawa dismantle the local competition the commentary team spends their time talking about how Kendrick and Tozawa need to have more tag matches to gel better. That way they can beat Gallagher and Gulak.
  • This match is much longer than I anticipated. It’s a nice change of pace that still ends with Kendrick and Tozawa winning.

And I’m Like… I’m a bit of a fan of these showcase matches. We as viewers get acquainted with the movesets of the superstars and commentary get time to put over whatever stories the wrestlers are involved in. Kendrick and Tozawa showed that they are happy friends by simultaneously getting the crowd to “Ahh” with them.

Buddy Murphy and Tony Nese say they are not worried about next week. Buddy has beat them both individually and you add Tony to the mix? The numbers spell disaster for Cedric and Mustafa.

Gran Metalik w/ Lucha House Party vs. TJP w/ The Kanellis’

  • This story has been building for weeks. With TJP disrespecting lucha culture and now Mike Kanellis joining up with the cruisergreat.
  • LHP are doing double duty working on the Raw roster and 205 Live roster. It’s pretty crazy that they are the only ones that appear on both Monday and Tuesday nights.
  • Mike and TJP are brought out by Maria wearing Kalisto and Gran Metalik masks. Lucha House Party loses their cool because their masks mean everything to them. Drake Maverick tells everyone to go backstage?
  • Everyone except Metalik and TJP so it’s a one on one match. Smart move on 205’s part in making this match even Steven.
  • TJP catches Metalik in mid air to apply a leg submission. Gran Metalik seems a bit over his head in this match.
  • TJP hit a dive to the outside and tweaked his ankle a bit.
  • TJP works over Metalik with some nearfalls and rest holds. Metalik only attempts to fight out of the hold when it’s time for the next sequence to happen. That’s one thing I miss, when wrestlers are always making it seem like they are fighting and not planning the next move.
  • TJP dominates the match until he decides to go on the top rope. Metalik hits a kick and we get an obligatory 205 fight on the top rope. Metalik comes out with the advantage after that.
  • Both men trade nearfalls after trying some high impact moves. The crowd still sounds invested too!
  • TJP does one of my least favorite moves. When TJP jumps over the top rope and hits a dropkick on the apron. If I’m to believe that moves on the apron are the most devastating, why does it not effect TJP when he takes a flat back bump from the top of the ropes to apron.
  • TJP is able to counter a top rope move into a kneebar on Metalik. TJP doesn’t capitalize and instead opts to go for Gran Metalik’s pinata.
  • Metalik is able to sneak a win after a roll up.
  • Maria comes out screaming and crying on the microphone. “HOW COULD YOU I HAVE A FAMILY.” That she then starts laughing because Kanellis shows up with a chair and destroys Lucha Hous Party.

And I’m Like… Some shady shit by The Kanellis’ but it was good shady shit. A nice little feud heating up with these two teams. Not sure what it’s about other than stealing masks but at least things are happening!!
