The WWE United States title was on the line earlier tonight as part of the Royal Rumble Kickoff Pre-Show. Rusev would put the belt on the line against the former champion Shinsuke Nakamura.
The match was the second of the night, following a tag team match between Gable & Roode against the team of one half of the AoP and Scott Dawson one half of the Revival.
The match was pretty evenly matched and was a basic back and forth contest until Nakamura went to the corner and untied the turnbuckle to exposure the metal underneath. Lana would jump up on the apron to get the attention of the referee of Nakamura’s actions, however the ref was more focused on Lana being on the apron.
Lana was then knocked off the ring apron to the floor, this distracted Rusev which allowed for Shinsuke Nakamura to connect with the kinshasa to the back of Rusev’s head and neck. From there Nakamura made the cover, and once again became the WWE US Champion.
