WWE2K Will Finally Have Some Competition in the Gaming World
For years now the WWE2k series has been the wrestling game that all gamers play. Whether you’re a die-hard wrestling fan or just a fan of sports gaming in general, the only game that has been around for gamers to play is WWE2k. It was not always this way in the past though and it looks like the future will be going back to the ways of the past. Yuke’s has been the developer of the WWE video games for over twenty years now, before joining forces with Studio Visual Concepts in 2014 to help create the games. Now, it looks like the two gaming companies are going to be splitting up.
While break-ups of any kind are usually not good, this one might have a positive outcome. With the two companies making the decision to split up, they have also decided to create rival wrestling games. Yuke’s senior vice president and producer, Hiromi Furuta, went on record in an interview with VideoGamesChronicle announcing that they will be creating a new wrestling game to compete with WWE2k20 and the WWE2k series in general. Yuke recently, has not been happy with the results and achievements of the most recent WWE games and they are striving to go in a different direction with their own wrestling game. When discussing the idea of creating competition in the wrestling video game industry Furuta said,
“I think having no competitor isn’t healthy at all. When we had competitors in the wrestling space, we were determined not to lose and that was a great motivator for creating something great. But right now, looking at the market demands, players are expecting something new every time we release a game and we feel like we haven’t achieved what we’ve really wanted to do.”
Furuta and the Yuke’s team are working on developing a brand-new wrestling IP though it is currently only in its early stages. With what information has come out so far though, it makes it seem as if the game that is in development will still be based on the WWE programming. However, they are also looking to include things that have not been including in WWE games as of yet, such as their proprietary motion capture technology, ALiS Zero. Regardless of what final products end up coming out from both companies, it will be interesting to see how wrestling gaming fans react to both and if this will be something that can continuing happening in the future after this first venture back into competing wrestling video games.
