WWE Did Not Really Do Luke Harper Much Of A Favor With Recent Release

WWE released Luke Harper from his contract on Sunday, eight months after the Superstar first requested to be let go from his contract. Like many others Harper was seemingly punished for his request as he then had injury time tacked onto the backend of his WWE contract.

Harper wasn’t the only WWE Superstar to be given his release from the company over the weekend, as Sin Cara and The Ascension – Konnor and Viktor were also let go. These four all have 90-day no compete clauses before they are able to wrestle elsewhere, however it appears as though Harper would have been free from his contract around the same time regardless of his recent release.

On a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that even if WWE hadn’t released Harper from the company this past weekend that he would have been free to wrestle elsewhere in March anyway.

“With a 90 day non-compete clause [Harper] is eligible to wrestle for other companies on March 8th. He will be a free agent on March 8th. His contract would have already been up now, but they tacked on time due to his wrist surgery, but with the time tacked on and frozen he would be a free agent on March 25th. So it’s 17 days. So, it’s kinda like they’re releasing him because it’s not really anything different.”

Basically Harper’s release this past Sunday only granted him an extra 17 days of freedom, as he would have become a free agent at the end of March regardless. This could all be another example of WWE messing with their talents who are unhappy with their situations in the company.
