In an epic battle at NXT Great American Bash, Keith Lee dethroned Adam Cole to become the first ever double champion in NXT history. I was absolutely thrilled for Lee – it was only 2 years ago that I was watching him perform live in the back room of a night club in front of 200 people. He has captivated audiences everywhere, put on multiple 5 star matches and is destined for big things on the main roster some day.
The question now is an all too familiar one… how do WWE book their champion when the “next big thing” is waiting in the wings? Karrion Kross has been built to be the future of NXT, an unstoppable force that is destined to capture the gold and is expected to do so soon. The obvious downside to that is that Keith Lee has to lose his first title defence, which nobody wants to see. WWE have played their favourite game of “backing ourselves into a corner.”
If it were up to me, the easiest way out of this situation would be to book a 2 out of 3 falls triple threat match involving Lee, Cole and Kross. Have the first fall be for the North American Championship and the second for the NXT Championship. That way Kross can win the North American Championship by pinning Cole, followed by Lee retaining his NXT Championship in the same match with Cole again eating the pin.
However, I’d also look at the possibility of a swerve and have it energe that Kross isn’t really after Lee, but was actually targeting Cole the entire time. Have it turn out that the hour glass placed down by Scarlett Bordeaux is actually symbolising that Cole’s time in NXT has come to an end and have him put over Kross on his way up to the main roster with his Undisputed Era cohorts.
