UFC 254 Unification Main Event announced
The keys to the Lightweight kingdom will officially be up for grabs as undefeated champion Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov will try to successfully unify the titles when he faces the challenge in the form of Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje on October 24th according to Dana White.
The UFC President told CNN’s Don Riddell “It’s going to happen, tell you right here right now, that fight is going to happen, Khabib vs Gaethje, October 24”. (via Mike Heck of MMA Fighting).
Khabib’s future was well & truly up in the air recently since the unfortunate passing of his father due to COVID-19 complications earlier this month. White has been asked to no end about the uncertainty surrounding Khabib’s fighting future however White has stated he wanted to give Nurmagomedov as much time as he needed to come to terms with the tragic moment he is currently experiencing.
“The Eagle” (28-0-0) is looking for his 3rd defence & 2nd straight unification bout having already brushed aside the advances of former Lightweight & Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor & former interim Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirer as well as Al Iaquinta to win the. This will be his fourth consecutive outing headlining a PPV.
“The Hightlight” (22-2-0) won the interim Lightweight Championship for the second time by becoming the first fighter to stop Tony Ferguson in the UFC, the first fighter to stop him via strikes & only the second fighter to finish him in Fergusons career. Gaethje is currently riding a 4 fight win streak (all stoppages) into his showdown with the undefeated monster that Khabib has become.
The venue for this unification bout has not been announced as of this writing.
