Reason Behind Sami Zayn’s Absence
While Roman Reigns has garnered most of the headlines, Sami Zayn also recently returned to WWE following a lengthy hiatus. Both absences were due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the wrestlers’ concern for their families.
According to the Wrestling Observer, Zayn’s time off was not due to any issues with the company or medical issues related to the virus. Zayn reportedly was uncomfortable putting his family at risk and was given time off.
Zayn was the reigning Intercontinental Champion when he departed, defeating Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 36. He was stripped of the title on May 12, and returned on the August 28 episode of SmackDown engaging in a feud with new title holder Jeff Hardy over who is the “real” Intercontinental Champion.
