WWE Contract Wording Shows Company Owns Legal Names
WWE recently issued letters to their employees stating they must cease all third party activities. This caused outrage in the wrestling industry and even made main stream media news.
Talent has been informed they have 30 days to stop all business on Twitch, Cameo and can reach as far as YouTube. It has now come to light that WWE contracts actually state this is a perfectly legal request.
Vince McMahon informed talent that WWE owns their legal names. Wrestlenomics noted that this is shown in Stephanie McMahon’s talent contract as an example.
WWE have stated that their Superstars are confirmed independent contractors, but they actually own nearly ever part of who they are on screen. The contract also stated they have a vast amount of control off-screen as well.
Some of the talent on the roster are apparently furious about this decision. It appeared to happen after AJ Styles revealed during a Twitch stream that he had coronavirus. There was also talk of Lana’s promotion of a certain energy drink.
It is unclear if any of the talent are going to challenge this decision, but if the contract is legal then it will involve the talent possibly owing WWE some of the royalties.
