The History And Future Of Kevin Owens

WWE have always been my go to for wrestling, but around 2014 I was struggling to find the same love for wrestling that I had. I wasn’t really into the independent scene and my vision was quite blinkered. It was around the time that NXT was really starting to build it’s audience, and on August 12th 2014, WWE announced they’d signed Kevin Steen.

Sami Zayn had been in NXT for a while at this point, so to see Kevin Steen sign for WWE was a fantastic piece of news. Kevin Steen was re-branded as Kevin Owens and the Kevin Owens show began. Owens wasn’t your typical looking wrestler, he was a brute and his mic work is impeccable. Moving from NXT to making his debut on the main roster as NXT Champion, was a great move. Even better was making his debut against John Cena.

It was during this feud that Kevin Owens solidified his name as one of the best in the business. The pair fought in 3 matches with John Cena coming out as the winner of the 3 legs. I wasn’t a fan of that ending, as I believe having Owen’s win that feud would have sky rocketed his career. Owen’s has gone on to win the US Championship three times, the IC Championship twice and the Universal Champion once.

Kevin Owen’s has had some fantastic matches from facing John Cena at Elimination Chamber to Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 36. It has solidified his name within the Vince McMahon realm, and he is considered once of the best on the roster, but what does the future hold for the Kevin Owen’s Show.

Kevin Owen’s is currently feuding with Aleister Black, and got the win over him on the most recent edition of RAW. This was during a blackout that Retribution like to do. His future is sealed with the company as he signed a 5 year deal back in 2018, so he has plenty time left.

What concerns me with Kevin Owen’s is WWE’s lack of faith when it comes to him in the Heavyweight title scene. During his ‘best friend’ storyline with Chris Jericho, we saw the best that both Owen’s and Jericho had to offer. This ended with a match at WrestleMania between the pair, but Vince McMahon took the title off KO just before this pay-per-view. It made the storyline weaker as it seemed it was building up to that the whole time.

Owen’s can go in many directions for WWE. I would love to see him back in the WWE Championship scene, or at least bring him in against Lashley for the US Championship. He has been a constant during the pandemic era, and even encouraged Vince to ensure that talent wears masks around the ring. I believe it is time for Vince to finally put the trust in Kevin Owen’s and I hope he does. One way or another he has built up stars, and he deserves another WWE Championship reign under his belt.

We also need to see heel Kevin Owen’s back, because there is no-one better on that mic than him when it comes to being a heel. His aggressive side mixed with his excellent in ring talent, and his ability to talk makes him, in my eyes anyways, one of the best to ever lace up their boots in WWE
