MVP – The Real MVP Of Monday Night RAW
Let’s talk about Montel Vontavious Porter, otherwise known as MVP and the year this man has had in WWE.
We go back to the Royal Rumble in January 2020 where the former US Champ, MVP made his shock return. It was nice to see him back but his return was somewhat overshadowed by a rated R rated person, but that was to be expected.
The next night on RAW we got an unexpected singles match between MVP and Rey Mysterio. This was, as far as we were told, MVP’s farewell. His one last match in front of his child before going behind the scenes. It was then reported, and in some interviews confirmed by the man himself, that he was moving backstage and to a producer/agent role.
During his last run in WWE, I was a big fan. MVP signed with WWE in 2005 and made his debut in 2006. He feuded with Kane right off the bat before his first WWE title, the US Championship, was won from Chris Beniot was in 2007. After a couple of title defences, we then get his first major feud with Matt Hardy. This feud is quite possibly the best feud for the US Title that the company has had since they brought it to WWE television.
His last appearance for WWE was in a tag team with Kane against Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler in December 2010. In early 2011 MVP left the WWE. There was no animosity when he parted, it was as amicable as you will get in wrestling.
During his time after WWE, MVP went on to sign with NJPW. He was crowned the inaugural winner of the IWGP Interconnectional Championship. In 2014 he signed with TNA as an “investor” and continued to showcase his abilities. This is where he would work with Bobby Lashley for the first time.
MVP would continue to show off his talents all over the world, only making one WWE appearance on the 25th Anniversary episode of Monday Night RAW. The next thing you know, after years of anonymity, he showed up at the Royal Rumble in 2020.
After what we believed was his swan song, we started seeing more of MVP with the resurrected “VIP Lounge” on RAW. He was helping story lines continue and progress and continued to show just how good he is on the stick.
During the summer, MVP goes after the US title. Whilst doing so, starts to get airtime with Bobby Lashley. In all honesty, he might be the only man in WWE who has made Lashley look like the monster he should always have been booked as. Since returning to WWE, Lashley was sort of going through the motions, being wasted on mid card feuds and Sami Zayn nonsense.
We then start to hear small rumblings of a new stable brewing. Some suggesting a new take on the Nation Of Domination. I for one am glad they didn’t go down that route with the stable and instead we get The Hurt Business with MVP, Lashley, Shelton Benjamin and now Cedric Alexander. The wrecking crew have become an integral part of RAW, tying in to the Retribution angle nicely and helping to keep the story as relevant as it can be.
MVP has been one of the most constantly good things on RAW since his return. His promo and in ring work has been stellar considering his age and injuries. Clearly MVP still has a lot to offer moving forward, and when he hangs up his boots there will surely be a backstage role waiting for him.
With that said, for me, MVP is The Real MVP of WWE RAW.
