Bret Hart On Who Was Responsible For The Montreal Screwjob
November 9th, 1997. WWF/E is holding its annual Survivor Series PPV from Montreal, Canada. In the main event we will see the number 1 contender, the current European Champion and also former WWE Champion ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ Shawn Michaels takes on reigning WWE Champion and Canada’s very own son, Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart. Both men walking to the ring, both men with totally different outcomes in their mind.
On a recent episode of his “Confessions of the Hitman” podcast, Bret Hart spoke in depth about arguably the most infamous event in WWE history, the Montreal Screwjob.
Hart explained exactly how everything came about, including the way it was dealt with by both Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels. He explained that his personal issues with Michaels were made worse by McMahon’s handling of the situation, something Hart feels didn’t have to be the case.
Hart revealed that, following the Screwjob, Vince said it was the first time he had ever lied to one of his wrestlers, something Bret likened to US President Donald Trump claiming he would never lie.
“The first thing he said, he goes, ‘this was the first time I ever had to lie to one of my talent.’ And as I’m sitting down, I go, ‘you lying piece of s–t.’ Then, we started, like, ‘you’ve lied to me all week, all month, all the last six months. You’re lying to me, lying to me, lying to me, lying to me, lying to me. Everything is a lie, everything that comes out of your mouth.’ It’s like watching Donald Trump on the news. And it’s like, everything’s a lie and it gets my dander up again.”
Hart would go on to name the three people he believes were at the heart of planning the Screwjob.
“I’d say I gave Shawn the benefit of the doubt up until I knew what happened, and I think that’s why he was so ashamed maybe. He felt so guilty. And Triple H, from what I gathered, I think he was pushing that thing more than Shawn. I think Shawn was more of a willing participant. Triple H, and Brisco, and Vince were the ones who created the whole thing happening.”
