Scottish Wrestling Promotions Say Coaches Should Be Regulated

Scottish wrestling promotions ICW and Fierce Females recently spoke with BBC News as they continue to report on the British wrestling industry following the #SpeakingOut movement. BBC have already spoken to likes of APPG Wrestling, Millie McKenzie and most recently Nadia Sapphire as they spoke out about grooming in the wrestling industry.

Now two of Scotland’s largest wrestling promotions, Fierce Females and ICW are saying that wrestling coaches should be regulated. Currently wrestling promotions and schools are self regulated, which means literally anyone could set up either a wrestling school or a promotion, without any formal qualifications or checks from a regulating body.

Brooke Badgley, who owns and operates Fierce Females spoke to BBC News about how she was shocked by all the revelations that came out during the speaking out movement, she had this to say;

“There were a lot of things that I didn’t even know, but every time you find out a story you find out there’s 10 times more behind it – inappropriate sexual behaviour, bullying, drugs at shows”.

Since these revelations, Fierce Females have introduced a new and full safe guarding policy to protect their young trainees as well as the way it operates when booking talents. This includes introducing a new safe guarding officer, Samie-Jo, who had this to say on their school and promotion;

“Any adults who come through the Fierce Females School are now required to be PVG checked. To make this place as safe as possible we have information-sharing between other schools, so if there is a trainee who is involved, who may be there for the wrong reasons, that is cascaded to other schools.”

Scotland largest wrestling promotion, ICW have stated that they have also changed the way they operates following the #SpeakingOut movement. A spokesman for ICW had this say;

“We’ve created an official code of conduct, a dignity at work policy, employed a welfare officer and are now carrying out personnel checks on all performers and crew.”
