Lana has had a strange transition into a babyface on Raw. After being portrayed as a social media obsessed heel, the split with Natalya has been designed to turn her into a giant babyface on Raw.
This has, however, been a rather auspicious push. During the road to get Lana over as a babyface, Nia Jax has put Lana through a table on a near weekly basis. It’s become almost a weekly Raw tradition to see Jax put The Ravishing Russian through the announce table, but the WWE sees this as a way to garner sympathy for her.
The strategy for her push has been unusual at best. Her victories have come by stealing and weaseling her way into victories, as evidenced by her battle royal win to gain her Women’s Title match against Asuka and how she gained entry onto the Raw Women’s Survivor Series Team, tactics a heel would normally use to gain victories. There has been very few reasons for fans to get behind her, but Lana has tried with delivering online promos that showed her breaking down into tears training for matches and cutting an emotional promo about being told she isn’t good enough, but WWE believes the continued table spots will help get the fans on Lana’s side.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said “In their minds, every time they put her through a table she’s getting more over.” Bryan Alvarez disagreed however, saying that isn’t how you push someone.
The WWE will no doubt continue to try to push Lana as a sympathetic babyface, with hopefully better results than it has gone so far.
