What WWE Intends To Do With Leon Ruff As NXT North American Champion
Leon Ruff beat Johnny Gargano for the NXT North American Championship in what was nothing short of an upset. It was a shocking moment for many fans but it seems WWE might not have thought this one through.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained the reason for WWE makin the title change hands. He revealed that NXT has used one of their “key championships as a comedy gag” for the first time. The company has no intention of making any long-term plans for Ruff nor do they plan on putting him over.
“It’s not like they bring the guy in and he wins the title on the first night and they create a star, which actually, you know with all the people they have that actually wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world, you know and coming in and first night in and winning a championship it’s done rarely and it can be done to get a guy over instantly. This was not designed to make Leon Ruff a star or anything like that.”
It was done to simply continue Johnny Gargano’s storyline as a “cursed” champion.
