Tony Khan Is Considering Splitting AEW Dark Into Two Separate Shows
AEW Dark has become a popular show on YouTube for pro wrestling fans. The show doesn’t just give AEW a chance to showcase talent that doesn’t get to make the weekly Dynamite show, but brings around up and coming independent wrestling talent in a way to get them exposure.
Dark has been a successful pipeline for several talents in AEW to parlay their appearances into contracts. Alan Angels, Will Hobbs, Red Velvet, and Serpentico are just some of the stars that wound up getting deals thanks to their AEW Dark appearances. However, the show is often packed and many matches take place on them. The show often features 13 or more matches and it can be hard to work everyone into such things.
In today’s media call promoting the Winter Is Coming episode of Dynamite tomorrow, Tony Khan mentioned how valuable Dark has become. It’s become so valuable, Khan is considering splitting Dark into two different shows. The first show would feature more developmental talents AEW has an eye on or is contracting, while the second would feature more established talents. So while one show may present us talents they’ve kept an eye on like Griff Garrison and Lee Johnson, you may find Matt Sydal and Brandon Cutler on the other show.
Khan is a big fan of the talents they’ve found for AEW through Dark and said he thinks it’s important to develop future stars. One of the big names he cited in this is Will “Powerhouse” Hobbs, who has gone from a featured talent on Dark to a featured match up on Winter Is Coming. Hobbs will be teaming with fellow Team Taz member Ricky Starks to meet Cody Rhodes and Darby Allin.
Dark has become popular with fans for its blend of these talents, being able to see exciting talents right now meeting potential future AEW stars. It could be interesting to see what happens and how this would tie into the third hour of programming AEW is developing for TNT.
