Sting In AEW: What Will He Do?
Arguably the biggest debut in AEW history was made this past week. The icon himself, Sting, arrived. Chasing away Team Taz, saving Cody and Dustin Rhodes along with Darby Allin.
However Sting would stare down all three men before leaving, including his old rival, Arn Anderson. The longest stare went to Darby Allin, who stood his ground in the presence of the icon. This part sent chills down AEW fans’ spines and neither man had to say a single word.
So what could Sting realistically do in AEW? As said during Dynamite, he has signed a multi-year deal and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reports that Sting will be a fairly frequently used TV character.
This news has already made some fans a little anxious, as they remember how Sting’s WWE run went. Although I think this is unnecessary worry.
Sting will have singles matches and indeed other types of matches in AEW, however they will not be frequent and in total I doubt he’ll wrestle more than five matches for AEW.
I could see Sting wrestle Darby Allin and then become a guardian/distant manager for him after Darby fully earns the icon’s respect. There’s not a lot of guys in AEW who would suit having Sting around them.
What may fill the time to justify his described role as being frequent could be the manager’s role or perhaps, like the vigilante that he is, Sting could be a presence that overlooks the show. Causing havoc for heels and helping faces, or even vice versa.
I personally like the sound of that last bit. He’d take it upon himself to ensure Dynamite moves in a certain direction, his law and order. His own brand of justice.
That would be awesome. Hell, anything that happens from this point will be awesome.
As this is not taking place in WWE, I think fans can rest easy knowing that Sting will not be the AEW world champion any time soon and he will be looked after well during his time there.
