Rocky Romero Clarifies Reports On Potential NJPW/AEW Relationship
The recent partnership between AEW and Impact Wrestling has fans talking. With all the talk of partnering with other promotions, fans are clamoring for AEW and New Japan to work together.
The ties are deep, considering how many former NJPW wrestlers work for AEW. The fans would love to see it, and even some of the wrestlers would love to see it. However, it might not be as close as some would hope or think.
There has been lots of talk the possibility of a partnership has increased since Harold Meij left NJPW, and on a recent Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said that the potential is still open for the partnership. Meltzer went as far as to saying Tony Khan and Rocky Romero are in constant contact, keeping an open line of communication. This is where the stories vary.
Rocky Romero himself spoke on the matter during an episode of Talk ‘n Shop and set the record straight. He certainly had a lot to say about how Meltzer framed the situation as things getting close, but how he was dishonest about how often Romero himself talks to Khan.
“I guess Meltzer’s reporting that me and Tony Khan are having calls all the time, like every week, which is not true at all.”
“I’m not talking to Tony weekly, no. I mean, I’ve talked to Tony in the past, of course.”
Obviously he was asked how often he actually talks to Khan and Romero opened up on that.
“I’ve talked to Tony probably a month ago, maybe more.”
“(Meltzer) is not completely lying but he’s making it seem… he’s selling something and trying to make it seem something… He’s trying to get clicks.”
Romero may have thrown a lot of cold water on the potential for a NJPW/AEW relationship happening in the immediate future, but he didn’t say the door was shut on the idea. Right now, nothing seems to be close but fans can continue to dream and hope for the best.
