Jim Ross Doubles Down On AEW Being His Last Gig
Jim Ross has done a lot of great things in his career. Having started back in the territory days, Ross has worked for both WCW, the WWE, and now AEW. Some of the biggest matches in pro wrestling in North America have been called by Ross, and there may not be many of those big matches left for Ross to call. Not for a lack of quality, but for Ross deciding there’s a timetable left on his career.
JR spoke about a variety of topics in his most recent Grilling JR podcast, including how long he has left on his career. Ross has has gone on record to say his current commentary gig with AEW will be his last one and he continued to confirm that, doubling down on it on the show.
“I got a lot of comments online about a remark where I mentioned that; as far as I’m concerned? At this point in my life? AEW is my last gig, and I meant that.”
Ross talked a lot about the differences between his work with WWE and his work with AEW, talking about how much he has enjoyed working with Tony Khan.
“I love working for Tony Khan, he’s a whole different ballgame. People just don’t understand, that the culture of WWE? It is what it is. It is all Vince [McMahon] related and oriented. When you get on the Vince’s good list? It’s a wonderful thing. If you’re not? It’s not so great.” “Tony Khan’s about the same every time you see him” Jim Ross continued. “And he’s still a fan. He still loves the business, he loves talking about the business, telling stories and asking questions. He has an innate knowledge of things that went on before he was even born. So it’s really a fun experience.”
He wrapped up that portion of the chat reiterating that he was simply being realistic about knowing when to call it quits and how happy he was to be with AEW.
“I think at my age? I need to be realistic. As long as my work holds up to acceptable levels, hopefully better than that, but at least acceptable levels? I don’t see any reason to go anywhere else.”
JR is a legendary voice in the sport that will definitely leave a void behind when he retires. For now, as long as he’s happy with his work, he’ll be the voice of the WWE. You can listen to the episode below.
