WWE Holding Themselves Accountable For Record Low Raw Rating
WWE’s record low rating for Raw this past Monday has been talked about quite a bit. Whether it was the rumor USA asked WWE for “darker” content while airing how furious they were over the rating, or how the backstage disarray in the company is contributing to the issues, WWE hasn’t turned a blind eye to the sinking ratings.
Dave Meltzer discussed this on Wrestling Observer Radio and while once again debunking the darker content rumor, he talked about how WWE is taking full responsibility for the bad ratings and recognizing the need to fix things quickly.
“Everyone… this did not come to one of those — nobody was fooling anyone or trying to make excuses. It was like, ‘yeah this is bad.’”
“What that means, I have no idea what that means of how they’re going to change it. The story that USA Network said they wanted more adult or dark content, that’s just not true. Were they happy with the rating? Of course not. There’s an expectation of what RAW is supposed to do and it just wasn’t that.”
While the company isn’t afraid of throwing a Hail Mary or two to improve ratings, moves like that can be like a bandaid on a bullet wound. There’s still plenty of things the company has to do to keep the ratings steady and consistent, and that hopefully is the focus going forward, a long term plan to boost ratings and sustain them. A couple years ago, the McMahon Family announced on Raw that the fans were the real authority, but it’s clear that with a few favorite stars being underutilized and fans feeling patronized by the content that that could have been more talk than anything.
