WWE Facing Struggle To Trademark Keith Lee’s Name
The WWE has been working hard the last several months to lock down several trademarks on performers. Now there’s one more hurdle for one of the company’s current top stars.
A report by Heel By Nature has revealed Keith Lee has been working to trademark his own name while WWE has struggled to lock his name down. His trademark filing has also included screenshots showing he has been using his name for the purposes of professional wrestling dating back to 2008. This filing was done outside the WWE bubble, meaning this would be for his own use and not the company’s.
Included with Lee’s filing is a consent form, something key in any WWE filing of a trademark. For the WWE to acquire the trademark for a performer’s name, they must include a consent form from the performer, granting them permission to file the trademark.
The WWE has an active trademark filing for Lee, but the Patent and Trademark Office is set to cancel the request due to not having a consent form from Lee. The office sent WWE a letter stating it was seeking the consent form to complete their request. On June 5th, WWE responded saying they were in the process of obtaining the required consent.
WWE received a response from the office on June 30th indicating the trademark will be abandoned on 12/30/20 if they did not provide the consent form. They are currently struggling to lock down the trademark for Lee’s real life partner Mia Yim, who has also filed to trademark her name.
Issues like this are why they have struggled to acquire other trademarks, including one for Mercedes Martinez.
