Jon Moxley Reacts To Brodie Lee’s Passing
Jon Moxley and Brodie Lee have traveled a lot of the same roads either together or at different times. Both are former alumni of CZW and Dragon Gate USA, along with coming up in the WWE developmental system around the same time.
Sports Illustrated had a chance to talk to Jon Moxley about the death of Brodie Lee, where Moxley had a chance to talk about Lee’s passing and what he meant to him. Moxley talked about how the whole thing still didn’t quite feel real.
“It doesn’t feel real. It feels like I’m in a very vivid dream and I’m waiting to snap out of it. My brain hasn’t accepted it yet. Right now, I’m completely f—— numb.”
Moxley eventually told a story involving their participation at WrestleMania 31’s ladder match for the Intercontinental Title in a match that included Daniel Bryan, Wade Barrett, Dolph Ziggler, Stardust, and R-Truth as well. Moxley talked about how he and Harper wanted so badly to be part of the highlight reel, they planned a spot together that they knew would get attention.
“We wanted to make the highlight reel. We figured the only way we could do that was if I nearly killed myself with a death-defying bump. So we devised this spot where he powerbombs me from the ring to the floor through a steel ladder, and that’s f—— sketchy. It’s an extremely dangerous bump, going backward at a high angle. “It was a gnarly bump. Vince [McMahon] bugged out. He thought I was dead, which meant it was a good f—— bump. And we made the highlight reel. I maintain to this day that I would not have trusted anybody else on the planet with that bump. I put my life in his hands, and I walked away.”
In the end, Moxley talked about how he was hoping to remember Brodie. Clearly, he has positive memories of his long time co-worker and friend, but it’s obvious he is grieving the loss.
“I’m grateful I got to spend so much time with him, from the time we first met on the indies. I’ll always picture him with that smile on his face. I still can’t wrap my brain around this. I don’t understand why the best people are the ones taken away so early.”
As tributes continue to pour in, we still send our condolences to Lee’s wife and children, along with his friends and co-workers past and present.
