Tony Khan Decided To Change This Week’s Dynamite Late Sunday Night

Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite was originally supposed to kick off the company’s New Year’s Smash two-night event. This Wednesday and Next Wednesday were supposed to be a big event highlighted by tomorrow’s main event of Kenny Omega vs. Rey Fenix for the AEW World Title.

Plans often change in pro wrestling, and it did when Tony Khan decided to turn this Wednesday’s live episode of Dynamite into a tribute show for Brodie Lee, with the main event now looking to be a 6-man tag of Cody Rhodes, Orange Cassidy, and 10 of the Dark Order to meet Brian Cage, Ricky Starks, and Powerhouse Hobbs. The rest of the Dark Order will be highlighted during the show as they pay tribute to the late former TNT Champion. During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about the decision to change the show and revealed Khan made the move very late on Sunday evening.

“He felt very pressured to put on this unbelievable show for Wednesday. I mean, he really felt it. He said he had some ideas and I mentioned some things I’m sure he’d already thought about anyway. It wasn’t like I was giving him any ideas, although I did suggest some things. I don’t know if they’re going to do them or not.” “Then this morning I hear from him and he said, ‘after our conversation I stayed up all night and re-wrote the entire show.’ So, that was a decision from late last night because we were still talking about Kenny Omega and Fenix last night.”

Wednesday’s show will be an emotional one, as many AEW stars have revealed in the days since Lee’s passing how much he had grown to be loved by them despite being with the company just nine months. Many of the AEW roster had known Lee for years prior to his arrival, and even those who had just met him had grown to love him. Khan had even revealed on Twitter how hard he worked to put together the card and how emotional the response made him.
