Danny Limelight Talks About Training At The NJPW LA Dojo
When training professional wrestlers, every trainer has their own technique. Even if they want the best results possible from their students, their methods may not always mix with their students. New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Los Angeles dojo trainer is Katsuyori Shibata, former MMA star and top New Japan Pro Wrestling talent.
His career came to a sudden end in 2017 when Shibata suffered a subdural hematoma, leaving him unable to compete, but he has taken the job as the company’s head trainer in Los Angeles, where some of the prospects they’ve found in America have trained under him.
Independent star Danny Limelight talked to Fightful Select about the training methods Shibata employs, and revealed that his teachings are full of “tough love and very stern training.” Also referring to him as “a perfectionist,” he revealed just how Shibata is quick to show someone how to get it done.
While he also revealed Shibata isn’t getting physical in the ring, he did talk about more about Shibata’s training style, saying “he won’t hesitate to get in the ring and show the trainees holds and guide them through things if he needs to.”
New Japan has always tried to find ways to turn their trainees into eventual stars for the company. Jay White started out as a trainee and Young Lion before eventually becoming one of the company’s top stars. Having veterans guide them has always been a key factor in their development and Shibata seems to be taking that process and providing a world of knowledge to them.
