Former WWE Creative Writer Reveals He Was Told Never To Pitch Ideas For Sara Del Rey
Sara Del Rey is a respected name in the world of professional wrestling for not just being one of the most gifted in-ring competitors ever, but being a driving and yet rarely seen force in the WWE’s Women’s Evolution. Del Rey has been credited for helping improve the females with in-ring experienced they’ve signed and helping the ones with no experience.
With all that talent, it’s hard to believe WWE never once considered utilizing her as an in-ring talent, but that sadly seems to be the case. On the ROH Strong podcast, Kevin Eck and Maria Kanellis talk a little bit about Del Rey as Kanellis recalls a time she worked with her when she and her husband Mike Bennett took on Eddie Edwards and Del Rey. Eck, who is a former WWE creative team member, revealed that when he found out Del Rey was signed by the company he was told she was only coming in as a coach and he was given instructions to not pitch creative ideas for Del Rey.
“Me and some of the other writers were trying to get the women’s division of being a little more than just two minutes. We had Natalya and Beth Phoenix. Vince said nobody wants to see the girls fight over the guys, so it was a losing battle. I remember one of the SmackDown head writers came in and he goes, ‘Sara Del Rey has been signed. Not as a talent, as a coach. We’re not using her as a talent at all. Don’t even go there.’ It was like, ‘Do not, under any circumstances, pitch her being on TV.’ I couldn’t get over it.”
As long as Del Rey has been a part of the company, there has always been a cloud of what she could have done with the company as an active in-ring competitor, especially with the quality of the women in the company now. We may never know and we may always have the dream matches in our head, but Del Rey has done amazing things training the future of the WWE.
