Don Callis Turned Down Offers To Join WWE Creative Three Times
Don Callis is a name that is just starting to get spoken in louder terms in the world of pro wrestling. He has been around for decades in several capacities, being anywhere from a mild in-ring figure to a commentator, and he is now currently juggling roles as EVP of Impact Wrestling and the on air manager of Kenny Omega in AEW. With appearances ages ago as a manager in the WWE and an on air figure in ECW, Callis has also been offered chances to work in creative for the WWE but declined.
He was recently interviewed with Chris Van Vliet, Callis discussed his WWE tenure in 1997 where he was The Jackyl. They had offered him positions in creative, but turned them down. It turns out Callis wanted to be the man doing bigger things than just another cog in the machine.
“I wanted to be the person pulling the stings. I was 29-years-old when I said that. Vince McMahon was not a guy who was going to allow other people into the tent. They had offered me jobs to move to Stamford on three different occasions which I turned down. That’s always been the goal. You don’t wanna be the person acting in the movie, you probably wanna be the studio or the person who finances the studio that finances the movie.”
Callis has certainly done that and earned the nickname “The Invisible Hand.” Callis brokered the deal for Omega to face Chris Jericho in New Japan Pro Wrestling, in addition to being a key player in the partnership between AEW and Impact.
