WWE gave a glimpse of their future last year when Austin Theory had a cup of coffee on the main roster. Originally brought up as Angel Garza’s tag team partner, Theory was then on track to become a disciple of Seth Rollins before being removed from television for months after allegations involving him came out during the #SpeakingOut movement. Theory eventually returned to NXT and now it seems this run is in preparation to have him back on the main roster.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about how his NXT booking is starting to position him to return to the main roster. It’s not known when Theory will return, but it’s clear he’s being groomed to return there.
“They clearly have big plans for Austin Theory because of his physique, although he was already on the main roster and they sent him down. Now they’re grooming him to come back. Whatever, it wasn’t the worst thing in the world to send him back down and in the end, it’s great experience to work with Johnny Gargano who’s such a great worker, but yeah. They’re definitely, you can really see they’re grooming him to get out of there.”
Theory’s main run could be considered forgettable at best, but his current run in NXT is being highlighted as being part of a top of the card faction with Johnny Gargano, a veteran he can learn a lot from. There’s no timetable on Theory’s return to the main roster, but it’s clear WWE is very high on him and would like to have him back on the main roster sooner or later.
