Corey Graves Says The Lack Of Depth Is Hurting The Women’s Tag Team Titles

WWE made a big deal about the arrival of the Women’s Tag Team Titles, and when they started in the hands of Sasha Banks and Bayley, many people thought it was going to lead to big things for the titles. It seemed like WWE was committed to creating teams that could seriously compete in the division, especially after it sounded like the titles would be defended on all three brands of Raw, SmackDown, and NXT.

That never quite developed. Many times, the teams have been makeshift and many of the teams put together have eventually split. The IIconics were broken up, and no team seems to truly last that long after chasing the title. Corey Graves has been there from the start of the title’s inception and while they’ve had a few strong titles, the Women’s Tag Team division is pretty shallow and could use work.

Graves talked about this on his After the Bell podcast and feels the lack of depth in their women’s tag team division is hurting the titles.

“I don’t mean this as any disrespect to any of the women on RAW or SmackDown that compete for the Women’s Tag Team Championships. I feel like the lack of legitimate tag teams is what’s killing that division. You have people that show up randomly that want a match and now they’re a team. You’ve got Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke who are about the closest thing to a legitimate team.”

“You’ve got Nia and Shayna that have grown into that role, but it’s just been a bunch of mashups of two random people competing for the championships and I feel like it’s just never really allowed that division to shine and become a focus like I know it’s capable of just like the men’s tag team championships. They should be viewed on that same ground, but I find it hard to believe that it’s going to achieve those heights until you have more legitimate teams holding the championships.”

The division has seen a lot of teams many thought would pursue the titles fall along the wayside. Teams like Dakota Kai and Tegan Nox, Fire & Desire, and others fell apart before they could reach that goal. While it’s possible WWE could still build teams, right now many of the teams chasing have wound up being two stars thrown together for lack of ideas with them in the singles ranks. Perhaps there’s still hope. After all, there’s a Dusty Rhodes Women’s Tag Team Classic going on.
