Kevin Sullivan Says Sabu Almost Had A Lucrative WCW Contract

WCW had a lot of management shifts in the 90s, and some of that caused sudden changes in direction. One person was becoming a featured star, but the next management group changed that as soon as they got started. It led to a lot of difficulties, and potentially its downfall. Some of that affected their chances at creating stars directly, as top guys like Steve Austin, The Big Show, and others moved to the WWE and found greater success. One of those that could have been a top star in WCW but got lost in there is ECW Original Sabu.

Kevin Sullivan talked about this on his Taskmaster Talks podcast, revealing that the company offered Sabu a three-year deal that would have allowed him to make $400,000 on his “down year” allegedly. Sullivan revealed that Sabu never signed the contract despite it being in his hands. Sullivan told Sabu to sign the contract as fast as he could, but Sabu wanted to have his lawyer look it over first. That small time wound up having a changing of management backstage in WCW, who rescinded the offer.

“He was signed. I told him ‘Don’t f*ck around. Sign this thing, it’s three years.’ I think the down year was $400,000. He said, ‘I want my attorneys to see it.’ I said, ‘Sign it.’ He didn’t and a day later there was a switch in the office and they ripped his contract up. He got screwed by WCW. He could have been a huge star. Not that he wasn’t a huge star, but he should have been up there with everybody else.’

Sabu had a rather forgetful run in WCW in 1995 which didn’t even last a year. Sabu continued to build his name in ECW, but he could have found himself with a rather lucrative WCW deal had he signed a little faster.
