Stone Cold Steve Austin Reflects On His Final Ever Match From WrestleMania XIX
Stone Cold Steve Austin’s final match came at WrestleMania XIX against The Rock. Nobody knew it at the time, but not only did it cap an end to Steve Austin’s in-ring career, it closed the door on a generation’s greatest rivalry. The top two stars of WWE’s Attitude Era pushed each other to new heights and became one of the most legendary feuds in all of professional wrestling.
Austin talked about this legendary match on WWE’s The Bump, and while he revealed almost no one knew it would be his last match, he does feel his final match could’ve been better.
“Nobody really knew this was going to be my last match; The Rock knew, and a couple of guys in management knew. I was going to go ride off into the sunset,” he stated. “I defeated The Rock two times prior at WrestleMania, and at WrestleMania 17, we rocked the house…I thought the match was good, but it could have been better. “I love The Rock. Right there, that part in the ring, he pushes Earl Hebner out of the way and says, ‘Hey man, I appreciate everything you did for. I just want you to know that I love you.’ I’m laying there with my eyes closed, and I said, ‘I love you, too.’ He meant it, and I meant it. Like we both said, we bring out the best in each other.”
Austin and The Rock were the two top stars of their generation, and few people have come close to matching the heights of their popularity since. They’ve cemented their place as the top stars of that era and possibly the biggest draws in pro wrestling history. You can watch The Bump below.
