At one point in professional wrestling history, the Canadian Destroyer was one of wrestling’s most shocking moves. The flipping piledriver was such an innovative move when Petey Williams debuted it that its innovation was what made it so notorious.
Times change though, and as independent wrestling has evolved, the Canadian Destroyer seems to be a part of the arsenal of several independent wrestlers. While that’s not a criticism, it has taken the special feel of the move away. However, only one person has been given permission to use it from the innovator of the move, and that’s the WWE’s Chelsea Green. Green had a chance to talk to Spencer Love about how Petey gifted her the move and how while it seems like it’s just another move right now, Green is hoping there will be a time it becomes special again. She also talked about how she almost took to social media to remind people Petey gifted her the move.
“I have debated tweeting that, because I remember on the podcast that was like a big moment for me! Like ‘did he just like really give it to me?’ I mean it’s kind of unfortunate that this move that was so cool and that I almost won All In with is now just kind of a like thing, just kind of another move. Hopefully that goes away. Wrestling happens like that. It happens in waves. And so, maybe we’ll ride this Canadian Destroyer wave and then everybody will get off it and it will become unique again. Who knows? But I mean, everyone, just remember that I’m the only person who’s allowed, okay?”
Getting permission from a star to do their trademark move can mean a lot to someone. Kevin Owens was so happy to reveal he got permission from Steve Austin to use the Stunner, and both Randy Orton and QT Marshall have been blessed by Diamond Dallas Page to use the Cutter/RKO. Considering the WWE’s ban on piledrivers, it might be a while until we see Chelsea Green do the Canadian Destroyer, but we’ll be waiting for the day.
