Sammy Guevara Allegedly Rejected Impact Storyline To Protect His AEW Creative Direction
More and more, details have surfaced over the situation that erupted over last weekend with Sammy Guevara, AEW, and Impact Wrestling. While we now know he rejected an idea put together by Chris Jericho and Don Callis, the idea he pitched in return was him winning the X-Division Title only for him to run back to AEW and refuse to return to defend the title, allowing them to put together a tournament to crown a new champion.
Eventually, the clash of ideas wound up pulling Guevara’s appearances from Impact, but it seems like some of the eventual idea he declined might have been to benefit his character’s direction in AEW. Bryan Alvarez talked about this on Wrestling Observer Live, and revealed information he got from someone who had more details from Guevara’s point of view. While Guevara had his side and sense, Impact Wrestling had ideas of their own.
“Sammy’s side of the story was not that he was going to win three matches on Impact. He would lose a match, he would get beaten down, he would ultimately win a match, and then he would be beaten down afterward.”
“It was also said that they wanted him to be in tag matches, but he didn’t want to be in tag matches because the whole storyline on Dynamite is that he’s splitting from the Inner Circle and he’s going it alone. Apparently, in his mind it was, ‘If the storyline is that I’m going it alone then why would I go to Impact and do tag matches?’ Apparently, he told people that he was upset with this idea and he wanted to win the X Division Title and then never lose it. He had an idea that involved him winning the X Division Title, but not that he wouldn’t lose it, not that he would go back to AEW, not that he would be stripped or anything, but the point is that they weren’t going for any of these ideas.”
Guevara ultimately wasn’t comfortable with the idea pitched to him from Impact, and he wound up calling Tony Khan about it. Once he was clear he had no interest, the whole thing eventually got called off. For what it’s worth, all things seem to be smoothed over, but that doesn’t make this situation less controversial.
