One of WWE’s biggest built storylines last year was the romance angle between Murphy and Rey Mysterio’s daughter Aalyah. The angle had been intertwined in Mysterio’s feud with Seth Rollins and wound up involving most of the family. After Murphy eventually chose to be a better man for Aalyah over remaining Rollins’ disciple, Murphy was accepted by the family as a good man.
Now, apparently it has simply been abandoned.
Murphy appeared on SmackDown for the first time in a couple of months when Seth Rollins returned to SmackDown. As one of the wrestlers standing around the ring when Rollins cut his return promo, there was no acknowledgement of his former disciple, who many people thought would be what Rollins would do upon his return to the company. Rollins never once mentioned Murphy the entire time. Now the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported not only has the idea of a Rollins/Murphy feud continuing having been dropped, but so has the angle with Aalyah with no explanation.
It was just an angle dropped. There’s no backstory or behind-the-scenes story on it. I guess they had no idea where to take it and thus dropped it.
Considering Murphy has been backstage but not used, it has to be frustrating how the storyline was just dropped, so here’s hoping they find something new for Murphy.
