WWE’s in a rush to pad out tonight’s Elimination Chamber card, and one of the matches quickly added to the show was a WWE Women’s Tag Team Title match between champions Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler meeting Smackdown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair.
The timing of this is interesting as NXT had Baszler and Jax on the show this week to help promote the title match earned by Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai for winning the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Considering it’s been strongly hinted that Belair will face Banks at WrestleMania, many people believe this match will set the stage for those two to begin the road to their match. Dave Meltzer talked on Wrestling Observer Radio that he feels the appearance of Baszler and Jax on NXT means this match will be a catalyst to set up Belair vs. Banks.
“The classic booking would be that Sasha and Bianca have a falling out and then it turns into a bit more heated than ‘oh we’re buddies and we’re gonna do a championship match because we’re friends.’”
WrestleMania seems to have The EST of the WWE and the Boss set for a collision course, but they still have to officially book it. And with lots of things to do to prepare for WrestleMania, including finalizing that match, it’s possible this begins that process. Though considering Kai and Gonzalez are heels, it might be perfect to give Belair and Banks the belts instead of a heel/heel match.
