Tony Khan Reveals Who Pitched Him Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch For AEW Revolution
For many reasons, AEW fans are fixated on the main event of AEW Revolution. For the first time ever, a major promotion in North America is advertising an exploding barbed wire death match as the main event when Jon Moxley meets AEW World Champion Kenny Omega. It’s the kind of match most fans have only seen in old VHS tapes and DVDs, but it’s unlike anything most fans have seen. It’s going to be violent and it might be hard to replicate again. However, you might be surprised who pitched the match.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Tony Khan wound up revealing it was Kenny Omega who pitched the idea to him. The story began a year ago when Omega also began his pitch to bring Don Callis into AEW, and now both ideas have seen the light of day.
“It was Kenny’s idea and it was Kenny’s idea a really long time ago. He had brought up Don coming in and the exploding barbed wire deathmatch a long time ago. We just had those in our back pocket for a long time and when it came time to do them, we were ready to execute.” “So I slotted that in as the main event at Revolution because I didn’t think there was any bigger match in wrestling than that.”
Khan has a point that it might be hard to present this as anything but the main event given the amount of buzz it’s generated by just announcing it as a stipulation. Omega and Moxley are two of the biggest stars in pro wrestling and two outstanding performers, so it should be interesting to see how this all comes together.
