PWI Announces World Title Recognition For Several Promotions In Its Publication
For many years, Pro Wrestling Illustrated has been very selective in what titles they’ve considered “World Title” status in their publication. Only 10 titles have been granted that status, and some have had changes through the years only for it to eventually be revoked.
At the end of 2020, the publication only had 10 titles recognized as World Title status, with only 4 of them being active. Two of them were only starting to be acknowledged as of April of last year with the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship and the AEW Championship granted World Title recognition. However, the publication recently announced that as of January of 2021, they have acknowledged the titles of several promotions to now be active World Titles in their respective divisions. The following companies have had the following titles acknowledged.
- Impact Wrestling (World, Knockouts, Tag Team, Knockouts Tag Team)
- Ring of Honor (World, Tag Team)
- NWA (World, Women’s, Tag Team)
- CMLL (World, Tag Team, Trios, Women’s)
- All Japan (Triple Crown, Tag Team, Jr. Heavyweight)
- Stardom (World of Stardom, Goddess of Stardom)
- MLW (World, Middleweight, Tag Team)
The NWA has had their acknowledgement reinstated for the first time since May of 2007. This is the third time the publication has acknowledge their title lineage as a World Title. The first was from 1948-1991 when it then turned to the WCW World Championship, and the second time around was from May 2006 to May 2007. Impact also was stripped of their World Title status back in 2015 when it was still the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.
