Stipulation Added to Cruiserweight Unification Match At NXT TakeOver: Stand and Deliver
In an angle that echoes that of Shaun Michaels and Razor Ramon’s (Scott Hall) legendary rivalry over the WWE Intercontinental Title which ended with a Ladder match. Santos Escobar and Jordan Devlin’s Cruiserweight Unification match will now be contested in a Ladder match.
Following Jordan Devlin’s match against Kushida on last night’s NXT, Santos Escobar made his way down to the ring just as Devlin had done the week before, when he first confronted the NXT Crusierweight champion. Devlin has been referring to himself as the real Cruiserweight champion calling Santo’s Escobar a fake champion with a replica title, Santos last week challenged Devlin to match at NXT TakeOver: Stand and Deliver.
Devlin successfully defended his Cruiserweight championship against Trent Seven last week on NXT UK and made his way back to NXT last night to face Kushida. Santos Escobar would make his presence felt during the match as he sent his goons, Joaqiun Wilde and Raul Mendoza to interfere in the match. Devlin was able to turn this against Kushida however, foiling Escobar’s plans and winning the match simultaneously.
Kushida would take out both Mendoza and Wilde leaving, Escobar and Devlin in the ring as the two mouthed off at each other back and forth, Shaun Michaels came down, sliding a Ladder into the ring. With out saying a word both Devlin and Escobar knew exactly the symbolism behind Michaels’ action, both agreeing to the stipulation as the two stood holding the titles above their heads.
Jordan Devlin won the Cruiserweight championship back at the Worlds Collide event in January of last year but due to the pandemic, Devlin could not fly out to defend the title and a tournament was held to crown an interim champion which was won by Escobar. Devlin was then suspended during the Speaking Out movement due to the accusations made against him and the interim part of the title was dropped from Escobar’s championship.
Devlin returned to NXT UK in October last year and started calling himself the real cruiserweight champion in an Angle similar to that of Shaun Michaels vs Razor Ramon for the intercontinental title. Now just as Razor and Michaels did at Wrestlemainia X, Devlin and Escobar will compete in a ladder match with both their titles hanging above the ring, to crown the undisputed Cruiserweight champion.
No news on if the match will take place on Night 1or 2 of NXT TakeOver: Stand and Deliver. NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver starts on Wednesday, April 7, on USA Network and continuing on Thursday, April 8, streaming exclusively on Peacock in the U.S. and on WWE Network everywhere else.
