Hiroshi Tanahashi Speaks On His Feelings Over HIs Canceled Match Against Brock Lesnar From 2006
Hiroshi Tanahashi was scheduled to meet Brock Lesnar in 2006 for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in New Japan Wrestling during Lesnar’s run as IWGP Champion. However, a “visa issue” came up and the match was canceled.
Now Tanahashi has spoken about his disappointment over the match not happening with New Japan’s website, revealing what happened with Riki Choshu informed him of the match’s cancellation.
“I go in there and (Riki Choshu) says ‘Lesnar’s not coming’. I was just stunned, like the world had gone into darkness in front of me. I never knew the real ins and outs of the contract issue, but I do know he had a really special money situation going on, and I would imagine that was what was at the heart of it. It was really an unprecedented set of circumstances when it comes to IWGP title matches.”
Lesnar eventually wound up getting stripped of the title and Tanahashi wound up winning a tournament for the vacant title. However, it seems like at the time Tanahashi was disappointed Lesnar didn’t show up for the match.
