Steve Austin Still Gets Emotional Thinking About His Last Ever Match At WrestleMania XIX
When we witnessed Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock meet at WrestleMania XIX at Safeco Field, few people if any expected it to be the last match we’d ever see Stone Cold have.
It wasn’t common knowledge back then, but it seems like a few performers and personnel in the WWE knew this would be the last stand for the Texas Rattlesnake. He spoke about the match with Entertainment Weekly, where he talked about the match and how it’s still hard for him to think about because of everything pro wrestling means to him.
“Almost nobody on the roster that day knew that was going to be my last match. My nerves were acting up from the previous spinal injury that I knew it was going to be my last one. As you can see, I still get emotional as I’m even talking about the story and going back there. I damn near started crying [in the documentary]. My love for the business is so much, it’s the only thing I really wanted to do in my life for a living. Deciding to retire from that dream at 38 was extremely hard.”
Jim Ross spoke on a recent episode of his podcast that the WWE left money on the table not marketing it as Austin’s last match. Then again, Austin did not want that to be part of the build for the match despite knowing it would be the final time he’d step in the ring. Almost twenty years after Austin’s final match, we now look back on it and realize that even knowing retirement was coming that Austin gave everything to the fans for that one last moment.
