Mick Foley Reflects On The Bad Options For Names WWE Gave Steve Austin
At this point, some of the names Steve Austin was given prior to his WWE debut are well known. After all, who can forget such memorable (but awful) names like Chilly McFreeze or Otto von Ruthless?
A&E recently did an episode of their famous Biography series on Steve Austin, running through some of those names, but one of them stood out. Mr. Freeze had been a suggested name for Austin, the same name as a DC Comics villain.
While that would’ve ended up a difficult trademark war, Mick Foley also talked about some of the bad names Austin had been given and realized just how utterly terrible they were.
“That’s a tricky situation, when you’re fairly new in the company, Mr. McMahon has agreed to give you a character change and you’re given a list from creative. The fact that I can rattle off more of Stone Cold’s names than the terrible names that I was given, speaks to just how bad they were.”
Eventually, they went in different directions and we know him better this way than ever being Fang McFrost. However, who knows? Maybe the Attitude Era would have eventually taken him in a different direction anyways and he would always be destined to be Stone Cold Steve Austin.
