Kurt Angle Says Ric Flair Talked Him Out Of Talking Out Of Signing For WCW
Kurt Angle wound up having a Hall of Fame worthy career. However, it almost didn’t start with the WWE.
As many people know, ECW courted him, but the infamous crucifixion angle with Raven and the Sandman turned Angle off of ECW. Angle then revealed on a recent episode of the Kurt Angle Show that WCW once showed interest in the Olympic gold medalist. Once he heard that, he sought advice from another future Hall of Famer who gave him some interesting advice.
“Somebody did approach me. I’m not sure who it was. Somebody called me and told me they (WCW) were interested, and they heard I was interested in WWE. Because I’d just met with WWE that week. This was the same week, right after the Olympics when Vince offered me the multi-million dollar deal. Somebody called me and said “If you want advice, call Ric Flair.” So I called Ric Flair… We started talking about wrestling and I said “Would it be smart to go to WCW?” He said, “Hell no! No way. They’re not gonna use you right. You go to WWE? Vince will take care of you. Don’t come to WCW, they’re gonna bury you!” Ric was working for WCW at the time! So I thought he either doesn’t want me to take his spot, or he’s being honest. I think he was being honest.”
With all the things going on backstage that contributed to the demise of WCW just 3 short years after Angle’s eventual signing with the WWE. Had he not taken Flair’s advice, one could muse that Angle may not have reached some of the heights he had so soon, if ever.
