FOX offered to help WWE Sign CM Punk
Before he signed with All Elite Wrestling, people at FOX were not happy about WWE not making a big offer for CM Punk to return.
Punk had a positive relationship with FOX Executives from his time as an analyst on WWE Backstage on FS1. It has been reported that FOX was said to be upset that WWE didn’t make him a big offer to return which lead to Punk landing in AEW. This was also one of the reasons that the WWE brought back Brock Lesnar.
Punk confirmed in an interview with ESPN last week that WWE did contact him through a third party and he listened but the contract talks went nowhere.
According to WrestlingNews.Co, Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that those in WWE said they had no interest in Punk. It was said that once Punk going to AEW was a forgone conclusion, FOX wanted WWE to make him offer. Apparently “WWE supposedly responded saying that the money figure he wanted was too high.”
FOX was said to be so interested in Punk going to WWE over AEW they “responded by wanting to help out.” However according to Meltzer, “WWE officials then said there were other reasons they didn’t want him, the attitude issues and such.”
Punk stated in his ESPN interview that he told WWE not to play games when they were talking but they ended up doing just that. He noted that he knew exactly who they are and felt that WWE continued to prove it to him. Punk was in talks to join AEW with president Tony Khan in February or March of this year according to reports.
