Finn Balor was set to face Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship but was then attacked by Baron Corbin. Corbin wasn’t able to sign the contract but John Cena was which set up Reigns vs Cena at 2021’s SummerSlam.
Balor had the following to say regarding Cena’s involvement and taking over his main event match against Roman at SummerSlam:
“I can’t think of a better place to face John Cena than at WrestleMania. I’ve got a bone to pick with John, the SummerSlam main event was mine, my name was printed on the contract, however, John signed it. There’s certainly an issue that needs to be settled between me and John and if we can do that at WrestleMania all the better.”
Balor told Liam Llewellyn of the Mirror.
Balor finally received his opportunity to face Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship to start off the month of September and lost. Balor will face Reigns again at Extreme Rules but will be bringing the Demon with him.
Balor also stated that he feels he doesn’t need the Universal Championship like he felt he did years ago:
“The thing I have learnt the most is five years ago I needed WWE and I needed to be champion, I needed to win. Now I don’t need WWE, I don’t need to be champion, I don’t need to win but I want to fight and I want to fight for not only the people who believed in me along the way, but for all the people who didn’t believe in me along the way. Even after all my success on the independent wrestling scene, people told me ‘you’re not good enough to be a WWE champion, you’re not what they’re looking for.’ I want to prove all those people wrong and I’m coming after Roman Reigns and the Universal title.”
